Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. It is a reflection of the mindless consumption of the humanity as a whole. It is a reminder to all of us that this fragile planet's resources are finite and unless we become mindful of what and how much we consume, we will run out of these resources rapidly, putting the current and future generations at risk of a hostile planet that is devoid of necessary natural resources for basic survival.
Climate change, biodiversity loss, and extreme weather events (to name a few) are all various impacts of global ecological overshoot. However, thriving lives within the means of our planet are not out of reach. We could still #MoveTheDate of Earth Overshoot Day by making conscious choices now.
How is it calculated?
To determine the date of Earth Overshoot Day for each year, Global Footprint Network calculates the number of days of that year that Earth’s biocapacity suffices to provide for humanity’s Ecological Footprint. The remainder of the year corresponds to global overshoot. Earth Overshoot Day is computed by dividing the planet’s biocapacity (the amount of ecological resources Earth is able to regenerate that year), by humanity’s Ecological Footprint (humanity’s demand for that year), and multiplying by 365, the number of days in a year (or 366 days in a leap year, as for 2024 or 2028):
Earth Overshoot Day = (Planet’s Biocapacity / Humanity’s Ecological Footprint) x 365

What we could do to push the date to the right?
Climate change and other environmental issues are nothing but an aggregate of the wrong choices we are making at individual level. We underestimate the impact our individual actions are contributing to this. The change should start with each one of us.
